RECOVERING ADDICT ADVICE
There is a world of recovery out there and people who are waiting for you and who want to help you get better. All you have to do is find them and be willing to ask for help.
WHAT IS NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS?
Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is an organization that has local groups in nearly every city. NA meetings can be found almost anywhere in the world. Meetings of a group often occur on a weekly basis. In many areas, you can find enough to go to one meeting every single day or even more than meeting a day. In these meetings, you will hear the message of recovery from people just like you. Members of NA identify themselves as addicts. They celebrate milestones in clean time. They work the 12 steps of Narcotics Anonymous to recover from addiction.
HOW DO YOU FIND A NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS MEETING?
NA is divided into areas around the US and around the world. These areas have names. For example, in our local area in Fort Lauderdale, it is called the Gold Coast Area. The website for the area has up to date meeting information and more. You can find our area website here. You should be able to find your local area by searching Google for the name of your city and/or state and the words, Narcotics Anonymous area. When you find your area’s website, look for a phone number prominently displayed, called the Helpline phone number. Helpline is a service provided for free by NA members to answer your questions. A real life recovering addict will answer the phone or call you back. You can find out the current time and location of the nearest meeting. I recommend calling Helpline. Online meeting information may not always be up to date.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO AT AN NA MEETING?
When you go to a meeting, plan on showing up early. This will give you a chance to talk to recovering addicts. It is normal to get phone numbers from NA members of your gender. This is the start of building a support network of people whom you can rely on to help you to stay clean. Don’t be afraid to ask for phone numbers. Make calls every day. All you have to do is introduce yourself as a recovering addict and just say hello.
You will also find literature at the meeting.
There are free pamphlets and also books which can be purchased at a low cost. I recommend collecting and reading the pamphlets. There is one on sponsorship where you can learn what a sponsor is and how to find one. Also, you should plan on purchasing an NA Basic Text. This is the official book of NA and is important reading material.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO AFTER YOUR FIRST NA MEETING?
Amongst the literature, you will find a meeting list. This list has all of the local meeting times and locations for that area. The lists you can pick up at a meeting should be current. Make plans for which meetings you can make it to for each day of the week. In your first 90 days, you should go to at least one meeting each day. This allows you to find the best meetings for you and to build your network of support. It also gives you the opportunity to hear many great messages of recovery. You will certainly hear your own story from other people at some point. You will learn that you are not alone and that getting clean and staying clean is possible.
